7th-century Buddha statue restored after being dynamited by Pakistani Taliban in 2007

A seventh-century Buddha statue that was once significantly broken via Taliban insurgents in 2007 has been restored to near-original situation.

The Buddha of Swat statue, which was once carved onto a cliff within the Swat valley in northern Pakistan, was once attacked via Taliban operatives who drilled holes into its face and shoulders and inserted explosives, Pakistani newspaper Morning time reported in 2016.

The ensuing explosion destroyed part of the statue’s face.

It felt “like they killed my father,” Parveesh Shaheen, a 79-year-old Buddhist student from the area, advised AFP. “We don’t hate any one, any faith — what is that this nonsense to hate any individual?”

In 2012, 5 years after the assault, a recovery procedure was once begun below the supervision of Italian archaeologist Luca Maria Olivieri, and with a $2.Nine-million grant from the Italian Archaeological Venture, which referred to as it a “skilled and ethical legal responsibility” to assist repair the Buddha, Morning time reported.

The recovery was once introduced as being finished this week, consistent with AFP, with government hoping that the statue is helping draw in vacationers to the world.

The Buddha of Swat wasn’t the one such statue to be destroyed via the Taliban. In 2001, the Sunni Islamist fundamentalist team destroyed the large Buddhas of Bamiyan statues in central Afghanistan.
