In her small house in Gulu, northern Uganda, Alanyo Joyce dabs at her naked breasts. In some spaces, crimson and oozing, the surface has been burnt off. It hurts, deeply, from the bone, she says. She may be grappling together with her new look – the burns lengthen throughout her face, legs and arms, in addition to her chest.

On Wednesday, eight April, the softly-spoken 31-year-old was once cooking chips and hen at her standard spot within the town when she realised it was once coming near 7pm. A national curfew were in position for only a week, as a part of Uganda’s coronavirus lockdown.
