A bold new chapter begins for the X-Men.

Marvel Comics just dropped another major announcement at C2E2, revealing that writer Jonathan Hickman is returning to the company in order to revamp the X-Men franchise.

As revealed at Marvel’s “Next Big Thing” panel today, Hickman is writing two new X-Men-themed miniseries – House of X and Powers of X. While Marvel isn’t revealing much about the plot of either book, the company is teasing the two books will usher in “the next seminal moment in the history of the X-Men.” Marvel’s press release compares the two books to other landmark stories like Giant-Size X-Men #1, Chris Claremont and Jim Lee’s X-Men #1 and the Age of Apocalypse crossover.

Both books will run for six issues and are scheduled to debut in July 2019, with new issues alternating weekly through September. House of X will be drawn by Pepe Larraz (Extermination) and Powers of X will be drawn by RB Silva (X-Men Gold), with both books colored by Marte Gracia (Amazing Spider-Man).

Hickman was a major voice at Marvel for several years, penning long runs on books like Secret Warriors, Fantastic Four and The Avengers. His last major work for the company was 2015’s Secret Wars, a massive crossover where the Marvel multiverse was destroyed and Doctor Doom became God Emperor of the new Battleworld. Hickman subsequently left Marvel to focus on creator-owned comics like East of West and The Black Monday Murders, but Marvel appears to have made Hickman an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Marvel also released a new teaser image at the panel, one highlighting some of the key storylines in the works for 2019. This image teases that these two X-Men books, along with the upcoming War of the Realms crossover and the recently announced Absolute Carnage, are all leading into another major event in December.

What this mystery event involves is anyone’s guess. Will this be Hickman’s next Marvel epic after House of X and Powers of X conclude? And what do these announcements mean for current X-books like Uncanny X-Men? We’ll find out as Marvel reveals more about its 2019 plans in the weeks and months to come.
