Shazam! Has a Post-Credits Scene, But What About DC Cameos?

Share.

The filmmakers showed us roughly 15 minutes of footage from the DC superhero movie.

IGN was among the media outlets invited last week to the Warner Bros. backlot to watch roughly fifteen minutes of footage from Shazam!, during which time director David F. Sandberg and producer Peter Safran confirmed their DC movie has an end credits scene and addressed rumors about cameos from Henry Cavill’s Superman and/or Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam.

Here are six highlights from our time visiting Shazam! in its post-production, starting with …

Again, Dwayne Johnson Won’t Cameo as Black Adam

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been attached to play Black Adam since 2014. In the five years since that official announcement, it was decided that Shazam! and Black Adam, one of Shazam’s most iconic villains, would get two separate movies in order to do each character justice. And although Johnson has twice denied that he’d appear in Shazam! (first in 2017 and then again in 2018), one of the journalists asked the filmmakers about a rumor he’d heard that Johnson was indeed available and interested in making a cameo as Black Adam in a post-credits scene but the concern was that a costume would not be available in time to do it. The filmmakers shot that rumor down.

“Complete myth. He might have been available. That’s the only thing about that statement that might be true. I don’t know if he was or not,” Safran said. “But, no, there was never a conversation with him about a post-credits sequence. Truly, never.”

That doesn’t mean the filmmakers wouldn’t like to see Johnson’s Black Adam appear in a potential Shazam! 2 should his own solo film not move forward. “You’d want to see it at some point, you know, because he’s a classic villain,” said Sandberg. Safran agreed, adding, “He’s a perfect adversary so one would hope that eventually you’d see those two onscreen together at some point but it’s not going to be in this one.”

What About a Superman Cameo (From Henry Cavill)?

The filmmakers were mum even though they did seem to downplay it whenever the invited reporters alluded to the ongoing rumors that Henry Cavill’s Superman might pop up at some point in Shazam!. The filmmakers reiterated that Shazam! takes place in a world where these DC superheroes exist. Billy Batson’s foster brother Freddy is the resident superhero buff and collects clippings and items from their past adventures, including a bullet that failed bounced off the impervious Man of Steel. And in the footage we saw during our visit, Freddy and Billy both name-check Batman and Superman at various points.

“We have fun with all the things around it, but first and foremost it’s Shazam’s story,” Safran said. The producer later said that there was never any attempt from Warner Bros. — which has infamously see-sawed on establishing a DC shared cinematic universe to simply taking things one movie at a time — “to try and shoehorn it into any sort of existing storylines or universe, etc.”

“They live in a world where these things [DC superheroes] are real,” explained Sandberg, adding, “which is also fun to explore because we don’t really see that aspect of it. Like how would pop culture — would they still have the toys, the action figures we have? And they do but it’s just based on real things.”

The filmmakers did add that they look forward to seeing Superman on screen again should Warner Bros. ever make another Superman film.

Yes, There Is a Post-Credits Scene

Although the possibility of a Superman cameo remains murky, producer Peter Safran did confirm that there is an end credits scene in the film. While he clearly wouldn’t reveal what the nature of the scene would be, Saffran explained what went into coming up with it:

“I think it’s probably the same decision-making that one has on all these movies, which is, what’s going to be fun, what’s going to be satisfying for the audience, what’s going to be a nice punctuation mark at the end of the movie that, again, is going to be satisfying for the audience. So that’s the debate you always have. We had a lot of options. I think we ended up with something good.”

There Are Some Very Obscure Easter Eggs in the Movie

Fans on the lookout for DC Comics Easter eggs should keep their eyes peeled during Shazam!’s scenes set in the Rock of Eternity. “We make actually some pretty deep cuts,” director David F. Sandberg confirmed. “Especially if you saw a little bit of it when he comes into the Rock of Eternity, it’s likely you saw, like, artifacts and things that are from, like, really old comics. So I think very few people might go, ‘Oh, I know where exactly all those are from.'”

“Basically, Geoff Johns and one other person. It’s for those two people we built those things,” quipped Peter Safran, in a reference to the former DC Entertainment president and CCO and comics author whose New 52 run has greatly influenced Shazam!.

Will Shazam Have Mastered All His New Powers by the End?

Shazam! spends a great deal of time on Billy Batson adjusting to his new adult form and the super powers that come with it, but will he have completely mastered them all by the end of the movie? “He certainly has a degree of control and awareness but there’s still a lot for him to learn in terms of the ultimate potential of what Shazam is,” Saffran explained.

“When the Wizard endows on him this ability to say Shazam and become a superhero, there’s no manual that comes with it so it really is a process for him to learn what his real potential is. He comes to learn somewhat in areas of potential but not the whole thing by any means.”

Safran had earlier touched on there still being more story and comics lore to tell for Shazam in the future: “Obviously, you have a limited amount of real estate when you make a movie so I think we’ve only have just gotten into what the potential of Shazam is. And also, for our film, it’s about Billy discovering his potential. So it’s about him learning what his powers are and how they work in conjunction with Freddy so it’s kind of a starting point more than anything else for him so there’s a lot more to go.”

So … What Footage Did We See?

While I won’t go into any spoilerish blow-by-blow of the roughly 15 minutes of footage screened, I can say that most of the footage was from the early portions of the film where Billy Batson (Asher Angel) gains his powers from the Wizard (Djimon Hounsou) and then proceeds to figure out how they work with help from his fanboy foster brother Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer).

These were extended sections of scenes previously revealed in both the trailer and the first TV spot, particularly the Rock of Eternity sequence where Billy is gifted with powers and first transforms into Shazam. The film’s humor and giddiness were most on display though when Shazam and Freddy were trying to figure out what exactly he can do with his newfound powers, from stopping a pair of would-be convenience store robbers to “foiling” a mugging that doesn’t go quite how Shazam assumed. The wit and whimsy on display in these scenes certainly bolstered producer Peter Safran’s promise that Shazam! will be a “fun, action-packed, wish fulfillment movie.”
