The father of the former Meghan Markle says he wishes he could have walked her down the aisle during her wedding to Prince Harry. Still, Thomas Markle told broadcaster ITV that he was “very proud” and honored to be replaced by Prince Charles. (June 18)
Thomas Markle is continuing to speak out about his strained relationship with daughter Duchess Meghan in hopes of reconnecting.
“I know we had our differences at the beginning – some question about my heart attack and so forth,” he said, referencing the health issue that reportedly kept him from attending the royal wedding, “but the unfortunate thing about my daughter and Harry is that they believe everything they read in the papers, and for the first year they were telling me never believe those things. But now, they’re believing it and thinking I’m saying a lot of things that I’m not saying, and I think that might be one of the problems, but I don’t have the answer yet.”
Markle says he has repeatedly reached out to Meghan, 37, who he says lived with him from age 11 until she went off to college.
“Every day I try to text her. I just haven’t received any comment back,” he said, sharing in his messages he keeps asking for her to respond.
Markle also stuck up for his daughter when Piers implied she tended to ghost people “that appear to be no longer of any importance to her.”
“She’s always been very polite to everyone,” Markle asserted. “She’s never been rude to anyone.”
Markle also addressed why he doesn’t just keep mum on the topic of his famous daughter and son-in-law, and it’s because, he says, the silence doesn’t get him anywhere.
“I don’t plan to be silent for the rest of my life. I love my daughter very much, and she has to know that,” he said. “And I would really appreciate if she would just call me, reach out somehow to me. Just send me a text. Just say you’re there and you’re hearing me, and you know I’m here.”
“Whatever differences or problems we had, we should be able to work them out, we’re family,” he said, addressing his daughter. “Please reach out to me.”
Markle was optimistic that the two would reunite.
“I’m hopeful that soon something will be resolved and we’ll be talking,” he said. “This can’t continue forever.”
He seems to believe the arrival of the new royal baby might help with that.
“I think she’ll make a great mom, and I think maybe things will soften a little bit and we’ll connect again,” he said.
While Markle says he hasn’t received Harry and Meghan’s Christmas card this year, earlier this month, he showed The Daily Mail On Sunday old notes from his daughter from before her relationship with Harry, in which Meghan’s affections were evident.
“Daddy, everything you do for me has turned me into who I am and I am so grateful,” a Valentine’s Day card read. “All I want to do is make you proud – and I promise, no matter what, I’ll do it… I love you with all my heart now and forever.”
